Canford Heath is an area of heathland at Poole in Dorset UK that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of the Dorset Heathlands Special Protection Area. It is home to the smooth snake, the sand lizard and the Dartford warbler and has an area of 420 Ha. Canford Heath has also given its name to a housing development. The house building started at the southern end in the mid 1960`s and finished at the northern end in the early 1990`s. Canford Heath now has a population of approximately 14,000. Now an established part of Dorset, Canford Heath has grown its own community life with three public houses The Haymoor, The Pilot and The Oakdale, allthough originally this pub was on Old Wareham road , a selection of churches, two supermarkets (Asda and Somerfield), five schools and a range of social activities for young and old alike. On the following pages you will find details of all you need to know about living and working on the heath. A big thank you to Helen Bach and Ray Wills for allowing me the use of their work.
